Promoting a "safety-first" culture in the events industry across Africa

Across Africa, various Acts, Regulations, Standards and Bylaws require every event to appoint a competent person to act as an event safety officer to ensure the safety of staff, performers and spectators.

Severe penalties also apply if an event safety officer is not appointed, or if the appointed person is deemed incompetent following a review of their qualifications and work experience.

This eight-week online course provides information and insight into the role and responsibilities of an event safety officer.

Presented as a series of workshops led by subject matter experts, this course provides the information you need to meet your legal requirements and create a safe event.

By using real-life examples, you’ll learn how to instantly identify hazards that could cause harm and create event safety documentation that includes organisational details, crowd management plans, and emergency procedures.

Event Safety Assessment October 2026 (27 Oct 2026)

Individuals applying for a professional designation in event safety must present their Portfolio of Evidence to an assessment panel convened on the last Tuesday of the month.

The Portfolio of Evidence needs to include:

A signed copy of the SACIA Code of Professional Conduct
Certified copy of ID document
Certified copy of the highest academic qualification (verified by SAQA if a foreign qualification)
Two testimonial letters from recognised industry professionals supporting your claim of competence as an event safety practitioner.
Detailed CV demonstrating relevant work experience as an event safety officer
Portfolio of Evidence, including a Risk Assessment and an Event Safety Plan for a low-risk event as described in Chapter 2 of the Safety at Sports and Recreational Events Act (SASREA)
Any other documentation supporting your claim of competence
Proof of SACIA membership

Our IBC Survivor's Breakfast is a great opportunity for broadcast colleagues who attended the show in Amsterdam to compare notes - and for those who were not able to travel north, this is an opportunity to tap into the collective experience of those who did attend.

There’s no cost for SACIA members to attend the breakfast, but we do need to charge a nominal fee for non-members. Seating is limited, and booking is essential.
